Torre may return to MLB; waiting to see what happens with Dodgers

GLENDALE, Ariz. — Joe Torre can have a job back at Major League Baseball if he wants it, but it appears that for now he will wait to be absolutely sure his Dodgers group doesn’t win the team before jumping back to work at the home office, people familiar with the situation say. The situation with the Dodgers is unpredictable enough that Torre apparently wants to see how it plays out before going back to his old job.Torre’s group, led by money man Rick Caruso, who is a real estate developer, dropped out of the running after saying they couldn’t do a Dodgers deal without the parking lots surrounding the stadium. Four other groups — Stevie Cohen, Stan Kroenke, Magic Johnson-Stan Kasten and Michael Heisley-Tony Ressler — were seen as the finalists, but according to the Los Angeles Times the Stanley Gold/Disney group is back in as a fifth.Cohen’s group is seen as the favorite at the moment (especially after Los Angeles billiok about his future this summer. The veteran defensive midfielder was linked with a move away to the club, and he almost got it through a transferfrom his loan with Fleetwood Town. The 22-year-old initially moved to Highbury on a season-long deal but is now back at Turf Moor having played 11 times under former Claret Joey Barton.Dunne had not featured in a Leaguchairman Ed Woodward over Paul Pogba’s future.Pogba has two years left on his deal – with United also holding a one year option. But the World Cup winner is keen to join Real Madrid – 12 months after seeing a potential switch to Barcelona blocked by We One game since the start of Nov to Club Brugge. But the move fell through and Wanyama is focusing on fighting for his place in the team.Annaire Patrick Soon-Shiong is reported to have joined that group), but the situation is fluid enough that there could be continued jockeying among hopefuls, and the potential for a combining of existing groups exists, according to people involved in the process. It was curious that Torre’s group would bow out over the parking situation since there is no evidence any of the groups has agreed with current owner Frank McCourt about how to handle the parking lots. people loved the job Torre was doing for them, and they’d welcome him back once the Dodgers situation is resolved April 30. Peter Woodfork has absorbed a lot of Torre’s duties in his stead and is seen as a rising star at MLB.

Prosecutors dismiss felony assault charge against Patriots defensive lineman Michael Bennett

The felony charge against , which  has been dismissed by prosecutors.

Bennett, who was  at NRG Stadium in Houston during LI (February 2017) when he was trying to get onto the field to celebrate with his brother, then-Patriots tight end , is no longer facing an uncertain legal future as he prepares for his first season with the . “We dismissed this case in the interest of justice,” King added. “After looking at all the evidence, this was the right thing to do.”

On Wednesday, Bennett’s lawyer, Rusty Hardin, sounded unsurprised by the development when speaking to Network’s Tom Pelissero.

Throughout the entire process,

“There was no fighting, there was no pushing,” Hardin said a year ago. “The entire thing is ludicrous. That’s what I think we’ll find when it’s all over.”

“He knows he didn’t do this,” Hardin also said at the time. “He’s assuming the system will ultimately conclude that once they get all the information. But it’s obviously a very embarrassing and humiliating thing to go through, walking out of a court room with a bunch of TV cameras and in handcuffs, particularly for something you didn’t even do.”

Hardin’s comments came after

Dolphins reportedly tried to trade for Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford before 2018 season

The NFL is never short on rumors and there’s a juicy one, albeit one that’s over a year old, that leaked out of the 2019 NFL Annual Meeting in Phoenix this week. The , unhappy with their quarterback situation heading into last year, reportedly tried to trade for quarterback .

, ex-Miami coach Adam Gase, now with the , spearheaded an effort to try and upgrade from their current situation, which featured on top of the depth chart.

Salgeuro reports that Gase got personally involved and specifically targeted Stafford, going so far as to reach out “personally to Lions coach Matt Patricia to try to pry Stafford away from the Lions.”

Per the report, the Dolphins and Lions didn’t get far enough down the road to try and actually put together any real compensation package, but Salguero believes the Dolphins were willing to offer “at minimum Miami’s 2018 first-round pick and probably more.”

Uh, you think? Stafford is a twntonio Rudiger will be fit soon. The German centre-back has been absent for the entirety of the season so far.But he is closing in on full fitness, and Zouma knows that Rudiger is a key member of the Blues rearguard. They have failed to keep a clean sho- or three-pick QB at least. Maybe Stafford at his age doesn’t command three first-round picks, but there is zero doubt he’s going to get two of them in return, in addition to a little more compensation coming back to the other team.

There’s also the matter of the financial inflexibility that Stafford’s contract would have caused for the Lions: , the Lions would have had somewhere between $46.5 million and $53 million in dead cap space last year if they dealt Stafford. They would need to really not like Stafford as a quarterback if they wanted to move on with that kind of cap hit.

Miami wanting to move on from Tannehill shouldn’t be too huge of a surprise: with everyone understanding Tannehill, theon Semedo.Mourinho is keen to bring his fellow Portuguese to London this month and talks have been held with his minders. For his part, Semedo is weighing up his future at Barca after struggling to nail down a regular start this season. However, Mspur are spreading the financial burden of their new stadium by refinancing more than UK£400 million (US$486 million) of bank debt, according to the Athletic, reports, /.The building of Tottenham’s UK£1 billion (US$1.2 billion) state-of-the-art homundo No. 9 pick in the 2012 , .

Gase always as a quarterback, or at least a big fan of the former Texas A&M starter. But Tannehill missed a ton of time, including the entire 2017 season, which for an full year. It wasn’t ideal.

and the Dolphins got fined for mislabeling his injury status. There was also and not being able to talk about Tannehill’s injury.

So despite Gase’s willingness to back Tannehill, perhaps all of these things make more sense in light of the Dolphins trying to trade for another quarterback.

Lions GM Bob Quinn was about possibly trading Stafford earlier this offseason at the scouting combine and firmly denied that it was a possibility, although Quinn could simply be making sure Stafford doesn’t think that the Lions wanted to try and trade him or even listened to the possibility.

Figuring out a way to make this happen would have taken a lot of maneuvering in terms of the compensation and the salary cap for both sides, but the “what if” factor here is fascinating from the perspective of how it would have changed the short- and long-term outlooks for both teams involved.

2020 Super Bowl odds: Patriots make top-five list of best value picks but don’t check in at No. 1

Did you hear that a Super Bowl was played on Sunday? If you’re just catching up, the defense put together a master-class against the to win 13-3 in LIII, cashing for gamblers who took the Patriots and the Under.

The Patriots contended all postseason that no one gue final with Chelsea is one of his remaining two goals in football. The Blues must beat Lille in the final group stage match next week to secure their passage into the knockout phase.”I have two goals still in football,” said Willian to the club’s fbelieved in them, but that certainly wasn’t the case last February. In fact, and Co. were despite the fact they were coming off a loss to the , who were second favorites at 6-to-1. The Rams, who fell one win short of the title, checked in at 25-to-1 but quickly rose as the betting market identified them as a great value at that price.

Speaking of values, let’s turn our attention to 2020 and Super Bowl LIV.

SportsLine has you covered for all your Fantasy, daily Fantasy and betting help for all those massive events. And for a limited time, you can get a quarterly subscription to SportsLine for half off as part of our Spring Special. .

The Westgate released right after the Patriots secured their win on Sunday. And in a bit of surprise, the champions were tied with the Rams and at 8-to-1 for second favorites. Who’s No. 1? The at 6-to-1, despite falling to the Patriots in this year’s AFC Championship.

Among those favorites, you have to like the Patriots at 8-to-1. What did they show this year that makes you think this run is going to stop anytime soon? But they don’t quite make it to No. 1 in my best value picks for Super Bowl LIV winner.

5. 50/1

The 49ers have been snakebitten by injuries in Kyle Shanahan’s first two seasons, but one of these years he’s going to get 16 games to see what can do. He had his team competing with C.J. Beathard and at quarterback despite injuries up and down the roster, so if the team can get some good health in 2019, maybe they can start to deliver on the hype that had many people tagging them as their sleeper playoff pick heading into the 2018 season.

4. 80/1

Are the Jets going to win Super Bowl LIV? No, the Jets aren’t going to win Super Bowl LIV. But you have to like the fact that they have a franchise quarterback in place in the highly-touted , and though Adam Gase isn’t a first-time hire people are talking about as a candidate to turn around a team like a Doug Pederson, Sean McVay or Matt Nagy, it does feel like his teams overperformed in Miami despite having one hand tied behind his back at times with an oft-injured quarterback. It wouldn’t shock me to see them competing for a wild-card bid, and if you can find a bottom-of-the-barrel team that’s still in the hunt late in the season, that’s all you can ask for.

3. New England Patriots 8/1

The defending champs probably deserve to be at least co-favorites, so in that sense we’re getting some value with them here. The best part is you know they’re going to make the playoffs and be in the mix for a title — they are every year. So if you take them at 8-to-1, you should be leaving yourself chance at a nice hedging opportunity for two games if they make it to the AFC Championship Game, which they’ve only done eight straight years.

2. Philadelphia Eagles 20/1

Just ahead of this year’s Super Bowl champions are last year’s Super Bowl champions. We have recent proof that the Eagles are capable of winning a Super Bowl, even managing to doa club shirt at Spurs Lodge.Mourinho has been unveiled proudly holding a Spurs shirt for the first time.To avoid being caught by photographers, the new Spurs boss stayed overnight at the club’s training ground in Enfield at Hotspur Way.The Jose Mouri so with their backup quarterback. If gets fully healthy this season, you have to like their chances of getting back to the playoffs. The fact that they have the same odds as the , who up until this season hadn’t won more than a game in two years, is staggering. I trust the Eagles to patch up their secondary and make another run much more than I trust the other four teams at 20-to-1.

1. 40/1

The Jaguars gave the Patriots a run in last year’s AFC Championship Game, and while many were lauding them as a potential Super Bowl pick in 2019, I thought the Under on their season win total of nine was one of the best futures bets of the season. The main reason? They had a terrible starting quarterback. We know they’re going to do something to try and fix the problem this offseason, whether it’s signing or another quarterback, who would certainly be an upgrade on Bortles, or drafting one of the best quarterbacks in the 2019 prospect class at the top of the first round, who would certainly be an upgrade on Bortles. The Jacksonvil top goal scorer Everton Soares. That’s according to theManchester Evening News. The club are looking for options to replace the Inter Milan-bound Romelu Lukaku and the Red Devils are said to consider Soares a top target. The 23-year-old broke into the le defense should be back near the top of the league next season, so if they get even a mid-range starter to lead the offense, they could be a tough out. I love their value at twice as long odds as the two AFC South teams who made it to the playoffs this year, the and .

Super Bowl 2019: Kyle Van Noy’s mysterious, wonderful life and his path to the Patriots

biological mother – whoever she is – will remain anonymous. That’s the way she wanted it in giving up her infant son with only one request – that he be raised a Mormon.

“It was closed adoption,” said Kelly Van Noy, mother of the linebacker. “We wonder, but not a lot. I don’t know if he thinks about it much.”

Twenty-seven years later, Van Noy has to wonder a little bit. There is a hint of that. Scores of players sponsor foundations as give-backs to the community. It’s good P.R., if nothing else. In the case of Van Noy, it’s in his soul.

The encourages “personal valor” in the lives of adopted children and those in foster care.

“He’s where our guys want to be,” as a player and person, BYU AD Tom Holmoe said of today’s Cougars.

“I don’t know if they know his whole story.”

When 53 kicks off Sunday (which you can stream  and  for ), it will be more than five-and-a-half years since one of BYU’s greats graduated. That Van Noy even got that far is almost a manufactured tale.

Kelly and her husband Layne are following their son to his third consecutive Super Bowl. It doesn’t seem possible. Not when Kyle was a wayward teenager who almost screwed up his life beyond belief.

Ten years ago, Van Noy was cited for a DUI a few days before 2009’s national signing day. That’s a concern at most schools. At BYU it’s a deal breaker.

The school’s honor code mandates no tobacco, no alcohol and no premarital sex. Van Noy was done as could be as a Cougar. It didn’t matter that he was a juvenile and the episode would eventually be expunged from his record.

The honor code is the honor code – until that teenager with the DUI requested a meeting with the head coach, he’d never play for: Bronco Mendenhall.

“You understand you can’t come to BYU under these circumstances?,” Mendenhall was quoted as saying in the best-seller “The System.”

Mendenhall expressed his love for the difference-making defender, then cut him loose.

“I gave him every chance to move on and go elsewhere,” said United attacker Louis Saha wants his old club to sign Kylian Mbappe this summer.Saha, who helped United to a couple of Premier League titles during his stint at the club, thinks the French striker should be their main summer target. The Red Devils havMendenhall, now at Virginia. “He decided to stay to BYU.”

More like begged to stay at BYU. Van Noy wrote an apology letter.

From Gladys Knight’s anthem to who will score first to Maroon 5 to the Super Bowl MVP, get everything you need to make the right picks for Sunday in .

There was a special connection between the two. In his first year as BYU head coach Mendenhall had the idea to visit church members the night before road games. Mendenhall called them “firesides”.

Van Noy grew up in Reno and happened to be there on a night Mendenhall spoke.

“I remember seeing him in the audience,” the coach said. “I don’t remember what was said, but there was a clear point I was ml have sacked manager Unai Emery.Arsenal’s 2-1 Europa League loss to Eintracht Frankfurt was the final straw for club chiefs, culminating in the club’s worst run of results for 27 years.Emery replaced Arsene Wenger in the summer of 2018 but has lasteaking and I saw it was directed right to him.

“It became a point of clarity why he might be coming to BYU.”

After the misstep, a plan was hatched that almost no prospect with Van Noy’s talent would go for. He would have to sit out and delay his signing by a year while proving himself to Mendenhall and Holmoe, as well as school and church officials.

“Kyle’s a good kid when you talk to him,” Holmoe said. “He’s a pretty outspoken kid. He knows what he wants. That’s part of his success. He’s really determined. He knows what he wants.”

A month after that 2009 signing day, though, Van Noy was out with friends. Alcohol was involved, according to a passage in “The System.” He fell asleep on a park bench.

When police arrived, he ran. Van Noy was cited for eluding an officer. He was not charged with an alcohol offense. Eventually the charges were dropped.

The case was sealed. Van Noy still told Mendenhall on his own. The coach reminded the kid, he still had that year to get things right.

“No one is perfect,” Van Noy told me going into his senior year in 2013. “I don’t like it when people have the perception that Mormons are perfect or they have that thing that all of them are holy-type people.

“We’re like everybody else. We just believe in something different.”

Van Noy’s promise was realized in a career the ended with him becoming one of BYU’s all-time defensive greats. Twice he was a third-team All-American.

His nickname for the coach who helped save his career came from the title of the Mormon faith’s most powerful leaders. Van Noy called Mendenhall, “The Bishop.”

“He was one of those guys who made every critical play that needed to be made,” the coach said.

A qualifier: There’s little doubt Van Noy would have been a significant contributor, maybe even a star, at places like UCLA, Oregon, Colorado and Boise State. They all recruited him hard.

“He would have made it [at another school],” Holmoe said. “Sometimes a coach can develop you. Sometimes you get in the right situation, but the best ones are going to make it.”

“It’s really hard to say,” said Mendenhall when asked about how Van Noy’s life would have changed, had he gone the secular school route. “What I do know for certainty: He benefitted by going through the BYU experience.

“I think his current marriage and family and ideals were all crystallized while he was maturing.”

Van Noy married his sweetheart, Marissa Powell, a former Miss Utah. But it took him until his third season with the to make his first career start. There were injuries, inconsistency. Halfway through the 2016 season, Van Noy was traded to the Patriots. Breakout seasons followed – a career-high 58 solo tackles in 2017, a career-best 92 combined tackles in 2018.

Van Noy is coming off arguably his best game as a pro in the AFC Championship Game (10 tackles, two sacks).

“They really didn’t know what to do with him in Detroit,” Kelly Van Noy said. “He had a rough time. It took the edge off his love of football.”

It’s almost more than a coincidence than Kyle hooked on with a modern dynasty. The Patriots have changed him as much as he changed them.

“He has definitely matured, thank goodness,” Kelly said. “I think he sees the needs of other people a lot more than he did. He was kind of into that ‘me’ mode.

“With his foundation and his wife, they are very service oriented and giving back.”

As for the story behind that adoption, Van Noy’s birth mother and her wishes, that will remain a wonderful mystery.

“Adoption is ear-old played 35 games for Bristol last season, but is refusing to sign a new contract. It means his club are willing to cash in on him, but would like a fee of around £8 million.Per Sky Sports News, Fulham are interested but are not prepared to go beautiful thing,” Holmoe said. “It’s such an unselfish thing to do … I understand all situations don’t turn out perfectly but this was beautiful.”

Thursday Night Football picks, schedule, time: Your need to know for Texans-Bengals

A week ago, before we all witnessed the slow-motion trainwrecks passing for the and , most folks pegged these two franchises as likely playoff teams. After all, Houston won the division a year ago with , and Cincinnati improved this offseason after missing the playoffs for the first time since 2010.

The Texans solved their Osweiler problem by dumping him on the , who eventually dumped him altogether. Houston traded up in the first round to grab , and three-time Defensive Player of the Year J.J. Watt entered the season fully healthy after playing in just three games in 2016 because of a back injury. And the team signed one of the league’s best players, wide receiver , to a long-term deal. On paper, Houston looked very, very good.

On the field, they were an unmitigated disaster.

And unlike the , who went into Foxborough and demolished the , the Texans weren’t playing the league’s elite. They got run out of Reliant Stadium by the . Jacksonville had gone winless in the six previous matchups against its AFC South counterparts.

How bad was it?

The Jaguars registered 10 sacks — a franchise record — including four from . They also forced four turnovers, and Texans quarterback spent the first half picking himself off the turf. He was replaced at halftime by Watson, who will against the Bengals.

The Jags led in Houston 19-0 at halftime in Week 1 and cruised to a 29-7 win. For the Texans, the performance not only meant they were 0-1, but they only had four days to regroup.

“‘It was a terrible day on offense, but it wasn’t that much better defensively … we have a lot of work to do,” coach Bill O’Brien said afterwards. ”I told the team we’ve got to stick together and we’ve got to get back to work right away.”

And Watt, who injured his finger in the first half and had just one tackle on the afternoon, was just as disgusted.

”Terrible,” he said. ”There’s only way to go from here and that’s up. Can’t play much worse.”

There’s more: On Monday, the Texans’ injury report included 21 names. Among those names: both quarterbacks, Hopkins, Watt and .

Meanwhile, the Bengals have their own issues. A year after going 6-9-1, the expectation was that this group would return to the form that saw it make the playoffs every year from 2011-15, which coincided with quarterback arrival in Cincinnati. Instead, the Bengals stumbled their way to one of their most embarrassing efforts and were blanked 20-0 in Sunday’s home opener against the .

Dalton, considered the stabilizing force in an offense that runs through him, had five turnovers, including four interceptions.

The knock against Dalton has always been that he struggled when the lights were the brightest — either in nationally televised games or in the postseason — but this was a 1 p.m. ET kickoff at home in the season opener. This wasn’t about nerves, this was just a lot of bad football.

“I didn’t give us a chance to win this game,” Dalton said after the game. “I didn’t give us a chance to score the points we needed to win. It starts with me. …  You have to bounce back. That’s where we’re at right now. We’re in a position where we have to bounce back and we have to come out and play way better than we did today. … I don’t have any doubt in this team that we’re going to do that. I feel like we’ve got the right guys that can handle this.”

On Thursday in Cincinnati, two teams that expected to challenge for playoff spots will face off after underwhelming Week 1 performances. And God help the loser of this game. Because at 0-2, they’ll immediately find themselves in the middle of the  “must-win” maelstrom, replete with ancillary conversations about the head coach’s job security.

The last time we met …

You only have to go back to Week 16 of last season when Savage, making his first career start, led three scoring drives after halftime to help the Texans to a 12-10 win, sealing the AFC South title and in the process giving the Bengals their ninth loss on the season. Savage finished 18 of 29 for 176 yards a week after he replaced the struggling Osweiler in the lineup.

The Bengals came into the game playing for pride, which is what happens late in the season when you’ve won just two of your last seven games. Dalton did his best to keep Cincy in the game; he finished 28 of 41 for 268 yards, including an early fourth-quarter touchdown that gave the Bengals the lead. A 24-yard touchdown run by several minutes later sealed the win for the Texans.

“The way this season’s gone, when we’ve needed to make a play, we haven’t been able to do it,” Dalton said at the time. “It’s not one thing that’s caused it. It’s just the way things have gone this year. It’s kind of been how our season’s been, and it’s unfortunate it’s been that way.”

Those lingering concerns have followed the Bengals into 2017. Whether it was just the first week or longer-term issues remains up for debate.

Should Deshaun Watson replace Tom Savage?

Two years ago, Bill O’Brien named his starter. That lasted a little more than three quarters  until O’Brien Hoyer for . By mid-October, Mallett had played his way out of a job and . So it was no surprise when O’Brian named Savage the Texans’ starter during the preseason and then, 30 minutes into the regular-season opener, gave him the Hoyer treatment.

Watson, the team’s 2017 first-round pick, will be under center on Thursday night, and he will join the Browns’ as the only two rookie quarterbacks to start.  And while we all know why the Texans drafted Watson, should Savage have been yanked after just two quarters?

Put ans League final against Tottenham. The Brazilian, 27, had been a doubt as he struggled with a groin injury.Klopp was typically jovial when asked if he would be in the starting XI, though.Speaking in his press conference this afternoon, Klopp said: “As other way: What’s O’Brien doing? We saw this to start the 2015 season and it’s happened again. O’Brien is a quarterbacks coach — that was one of the reasons he was hired in Houston. But his inability to stick to a decision about the most important player on the field makes you wonder what he’s been looking at for the last six weeks.

CBSSports Insider Jason La Canfora .

No coach has a quicker hook. No coach has been more prone to bench his starter mere quarters into the season. And no coach has been as predisposed to knee-jerk reactions that call into question why he gave invaluable starting reps leading into a season to one man, only to quickly reverse course without even three full quarters of regular-season game play than O’Brien. …

It’s an old and tired script, one that doesn’t exactly unite a locker room, and the decision to move forward with rookie Deshaun Watson — make no mistake,  regardless of how long O’Brien waits to announce it — is perilous at best given this team’s limitations in pass protection as currently constructed. After reviewing the film of Savage’s performance in Sunday’s loss to the Jaging to stay and fight for his place.Blues boss Frank Lampard was full of praise for Christensen after his performance in the 3-0 thrashing of Burnley at the weekend. And The Athletic claims the player himself is keen to stay and fight for a place in ts — and that of his teammates and coaches — I’m more convinced than ever that Savage deserved so much better than to be stripped of his job at halftime.

As La Canfora points out — and anybody with even a good eye already knows from watching the game — the issue isn’t so much Savage, NFL quarterback, but the Texans’ inability to protect whomever was under center. Yes, Savage was sacked a whopping six times, but Watson went down four times too. There are bigger problems here, ones that won’t go away just because you change the guy calling the plays in the huddle. Unless Watson can implore his offensive line to block in ways that Savage couldn’t, the offense will continue to sputter and the Texans will continue to lose.

Meanwhile, about Daytime Dalton …

It’s hard to explain exactly why Dalton’s Week 1 performance resembled one usually reserved for a national-television audience, but here we are. We’re now at the point where Dalton’s travails on the biggest stage have become slightly overblown, but since this game will be for a national audience we’re compelled to look back at how different Dalton is when the sun is overhead and the coverage is regional.

Thursday night’s game feels like an immovable object-irresistible force-type situation.

Fun fact (if you’re not a Texans fan looking for stability at quarterback)

This explains a lot:

Keep an eye on these guys

The cornerback was suspended for the first game of the season and he’ll make his debut on Thursday night. One of his big takeaways from watching the blowout loss to the Ravens as a spectator? Watching his teammates help Baltimore players up off the turf after a play. .

“I’m not big in helping nobody up. And I have friends that play on other teams,” Jones said, via “But especially when we’re losing. I’m definitely not when we’re winning, I’m really not when we’re losing. The competitive edge, you just have to keep it up at a high level and realize that everybody’s playing for jobs. We’re going to make mistakes, but don’t forget the competitiveness.”

The former standout was mentioned as a possible first-round pick in the weeks leading up to the draft but Lawson lasted until Round 4. A pass-rushing terror in college, Lawson picked up where he left off during the preseason. And last Sunday, he was one of the few bright spots for the Bengals — he had four QB hurries and graded out as Cincy’s best player, according to . Given the Texans offensive line’s struggle to block, Lawson could be in for a big evening.

There were five players in concussion protocol on Monday — inside linebacker , wide receiver and all three tight ends on the active roster, C.J. Fiedorowicz, and . By Tuesday, Fiedorowicz had been placed on injured reserve and O’Brien conceded that the others “are probably going to be out for the game” against the Bengals. This is in addition to the 16 other names on the injury report. If Houston doesn’t find a way to win in Cincinnati, it feels like the season could quickly get away from O’Brien.

They said these words

O’Brien, when asked who would start for the Texans at quarterback: “I don’t think there’s a rule that says I have to publicly announce it.”

Bengals coach Marvin Lewis telling reporters what everybody else already knows, even if O’Brien won’t admit it: “We’re kind of planning on it being Deshaun. Because if they made the change like they did at halftime, I would imagine it would be him coming forward here, at least this week.”

Dispatches from Fantasy Island

If you’re desperate for a quarterback, writes that Watson could be an option: “The best thing he did for Fantasy owners was lean on , but Watson can develop into a quality Fantasy option in two-quarterback leagues. He’s worth 1 percent of your FAAB dollars.”

Dalton, meanwhile, is among the quarterbacks you should drop: “Dalton was terrible against Baltimore in Week 1 and should struggle Thursday night against the Texans given his prime-time woes. He’ll be someone to add again later this year, but there’s no reason to stash him if you have a capable starting option or can swap him out.”

Who ya got?

Just  have the Bengals covering the four-point spread, but seven experts have the Bengals winning straight up.

“The quarterback is up in the air for the Texans, but the offensive line is the bigger issue — no matter who starts. The Bengals have the same problem, and Andy Dalton is coming off a bad game. Can either of thDerby manager is expected to take the reins at Stamford Bridge before players return for pre-season training on Friday. His assistant Jody Morris is set to replace Zola as No2, while Shay Given will also join the backroom staff.Zola could remain at Stese teams get the offenses going? The Vikings’ history is an exploration into the depths of playoff heartbreak

Back in May the NFL writers and editors at gathered together to discuss the key figures and moments of every NFL franchise in the Super Bowl era. Before long we were discussing every team’s best and worst moments, along with their most-hated players and coaches, as well as some of the more bizarre things each team has been involved in. That spirited discussion produced this series — the Good, Bad, Ugly and, sometimes, Bizarre moments for every team. We continue with the Minnesota Vikings.

To understand how Bud Grant became so popular in Minnesota, you first have to understand how ugly things were when Grant was hired in 1967. Basically the Vikings were a circus.

When Grant took over as head coach of the Vikings 49 years ago, things were looking pretty bleak in Minnesota. Grant was taking over for Norm Van Brocklin, a coach who was so sick of coaching that he actually quit the Vikings job twice in 15 months.

Van Brocklin , but this wasn’t your normal resignation, because Van Brocklin would return the next week and coach the Vikings for 15 more months.

In February 1967, things got so ugly that quarterback Fran Tarkenton “quit” the team, which for a second time.

Carson Palmer’s strategy to get out of Cincinnati in 2011 was basically invented by Tarkenton. Tarkenton swore he would never play for the Vikings again, so on March 7, 1967, the team New York Giants.

Four days later, Grant was hired to coach a team that was in complete turmoil and had no starting quarterback. Not an ideal place to start for a first-time head coach.

In his first month on the job, Grant fixed his first problem: He brought in a quarterback.

Grant and Vikings general manager Jim Finks had both spent some time in the CFL, so that’s where they looked for their starting quarterback. The team brought in Joe Kapp, who had spent eight seasons in the CFL, a span that included two Grey Cup appearances and one championship with the British Columbia Lions.

The other big move Grant made came in the 1967 , which took place on March 14, just three days after he was hired. With the 15th overall pick, the Vikings selected Alan Page, a future Hall-of-Famer, who played a key role on the team’s Purple People Eater defense.

Although the Vikings struggled to a 3-8-3 record during Grant’s first season on the job, there wouldn’t be much struggling after that. In 10 of his next 11 seasons with the team, Grant would lead the Vikings to the postseason. It was a ridiculous stretch that included three appearances in four years between 1973 and 1976.

Grant was successful despite the fact that there always seemed to be some sort of drama surrounding the team. After Kapp led the Vikings to a Super Bowl IV appearance in 1969, he decided to hold out for more money the following season. Kapp was , but the Vikings wouldn’t give it to him.

Instead of giving money to Kapp, Grant decided to plug in Gary Cuozzo at quarterback and the team didn’t miss a beat. Kapp would leave Minnesota and the Vikings would go to the playoffs in both years that Cuozzo was the team’s starter.

Despite Cuozzo’s success, Grant wasn’t content, so he in January 1972: He brought Tarkenton back to Minnesota.

The combination of Tarkenton on offense and the Purple People Eaters on defense made the Vikings virtually unstoppable. Not only did they reach three Super Bowls in four years, but they also went to the NFC title game four times in five years (1973-1977).

It took a miracle from the Cowboys to keep the Vikings from going to five straight NFC title games. In a 1975 divisional playoff game, the Vikings lost 17-14 after Roger Staubach pass with just 24 seconds left in the game.

Although Grant never won a Super Bowl, he’s one of only eight coaches in NFL history to have made it to the big game four times.

After Grant retired in 1983, the Vikings fell apart. The team went 3-13 in 1984, which led the front office to make a wild offer to Grant: Come back and we’ll .

The internet would probably explode if an NFL coach got a lifetime contract today, but it’s something that actually happened in 1985.

That’s the kind of offer that’s impossible to turn down, so Grant took it and returned to the Vikings sideline in 1985. One more season was enough though, and Grant of the year. It was almost fitting that he retired twice since he replaced a coach that had resigned twice.

Grant finished his Hall of Fame career with 158 regular seasons wins, which still stands as the 17th highest total in NFL history. During his career, Grant coached several players who would end up in the Hall of Fame, including: Paul Krause, Mick Tingelhoff, Ron Yary, Carl Eller, Tarkenton and Page.

Although Grant’s been retired for over 30 years, he really hasn’t slowed down much. The 89-year-old is still a popular figure in Minnesota, and he definitely loves the weather there. While most of us would get hypothermia if we walked out into freezing cold weather, that’s not the case with Grant, who wore short-sleeves for the opening coin toss of the Vikings-Seahawks playoff game in January.

The temperature at kickoff (-20 windchill).

Even in retirement, Grant has endeared himself to the Minneapolis community. Grant’s garage sale is pretty much the social event of the summer in Minnesota.

The Vikings postseason history has basically been one giant nightmare for fans in Minnesota. Since the franchise’s inception in 1961, the team has suffered shocking loss after shocking loss after shocking loss in the playoffs.

There’s almost been so many shocking losses that we can’t can even call them shocking anymore because it’s just what you come to expect when the Vikings play in the postseason.

For a team that’s lost four Super Bowls, it would be easy to say that one of those losses stung the most, but that’s probably not the case for most Vikings fans. For most fans, the playoff loss that stung the most was probably ‘The miss heard ’round the world:’ Gary Anderson’s 38-yard field goal that sailed wide left in the NFC title game.

After a 15-1 season in 1998, the Vikings looked like a surefire favorite to advance to Super Bowl XXXIII. Following a 41-21 divisional playoff win over the Cardinals, the only thing standing in the way of the Vikings and a Super Bowl berth was the Atlanta Falcons.

No one thought the Vikings were going to lose. Minnesota was an 11-point favorite and they were playing at home, where they had won 10 straight games, including the playoffs.

The blowout didn’t happen though: With 2:11 seconds left, the Vikings were only leading 27-20.

After a Vikings’ drive stalled on the Falcons’ 21-yard line, Minnesota sent out Gary Anderson to that would have presumably iced the game.

What happened next will probably go down in NFL history as the most shocking miss of all-time.

Scott Norwood’s might be the most famous miss of all-time, but Anderson’s was the most shocking for one big reason: He hadn’t missed a kick all season.

In 1998, Anderson became the first kicker ever to make it through an entire season without a miss: The Vikings kicker went 35-for-35 on field goals and 59-for-59 on extra points. Dating back to 1997, Anderson had made 122 consecutive kicks, which led pretty much everyone to believe that there was no way he was going to miss against the Falcons.

After the snap, Anderson’s kick — and the Vikings’ Super Bowl hopes — went wide left.

Although you can’t completely blame Anderson for the loss, that’s what people remember from the game. It’s worth noting that the Falcons had to drive 71-yards in the final two-minutes to tie the game after Anderson’s miss.

Even then, Minnesota could’ve still won.

The Vikings would get the ball twice in overtime, but they’re high-scoring offense was never able to move the ball past their own 42-yard line.

The reason Anderson’s miss hurts so much is because it effectively ended the season of the most successful Vikings team in franchise history. Randall Cunningham and Randy Moss led a Vikings offense that put up 556 points in 1998. That broke the NFL record at the time and still stands as the fifth-highest scoring season in NFL history.

The Vikings defense wasn’t bad, either. They only gave up 18.5 points per game in 1998, which ranked sixth in the NFL.

Anderson’s miss kept one of the best teams in NFL history from getting to the Super Bowl.

Although Anderson would go 9-of-9 on all his other postseason field goal attempts in Minnesota, no one really remembers any of those. Even worse, Anderson’s name is one of the first ones that comes up when people have a conversation about the NFL’s all-time greatest chokes.

With 19 seconds left in the NFC title game after the 2009 season, Favre threw interception of all-time, which is saying a lot because Favre threw a lot of interceptions.

If Favre throws the ball out-of-bounds, the Vikings could’ve tried a 56-yard field game to win the game. If Favre scrambles and gets two or three yards, the field goal becomes a 53-yard attempt. Favre did neither of those things though, and instead, he threw an interception.

This wound’s still fresh, so maybe we shouldn’t talk about how Blair Walsh completely choked on a 27-yard field goal attempt to beat the Seahawks back in January.

The term “Hail Mary” was basically invented in this game. The bad news for the Vikings is that they weren’t the ones who threw it. Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach hit Drew Pearson for a 50-yard touchdown with 24 seconds left to give Dallas a 17-14 win over the Vikings.

Anyway, I’ll stop now. We don’t need any Vikings fans having nightmares tonight.

It doesn’t get much uglier than your star player being indicted on a charge of child abuse, but that’s exactly what happened to the Vikings in 2014. Just five days after Minnesota’s regular season opener, authorities in Texas announced that Peterson for “reckless or negligent injury to a child.”

The Vikings running back was accused of hitting his son with a switch as a way to discipline him. The beatings were allegedly so bad that they left lacerations on the boy’s arms and legs.

Peterson’s indictment was the beginning of a harrowing 10-month saga that didn’t completely come to an end until July 2015. Shortly after the indictment, Peterson was placed on the NFL’s Exempt/Commissioner’s Permission List wheres Pepe to Liverpool. The Ivory Coast striker has been linked with Tottenham, Bayern Munich and Arsenal. But L’Equipe says Lille have offered Pepe to Liverpool in recent days – and Reds boss Jurgen Klopp is eager to see the deal happen.LOSC want €80m he spent the next eight weeks.

Since he wasn’t suspended yet, Peterson was able to collect the $690,000 game check for each of the eight games he missed.

On Nov. 4, 2014, Peterson reduced charge of misdemeanor reckless assault. Under the plea, Peterson wasn’t required to do any jail time, but he did have to pay a $4,000 fine. The running back was also sentenced to 80 hours of community service.

The saga didn’t end there, though. Shortly after the plea deal, Peterson him, but that didn’t happen. Instead, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announced would be suspended for the rest of the 2014 season.

Peterson would appeal the suspension, only to lose again when an NFL arbitrator . The Peterson decision led to a federal lawsuit by the NFLPA, which wasn’t settled until March 2015 when a j. The ruling led to Peterson’s reinstatement by the NFL in mid-April.

Although Peterson was reinstated, the NFL did appeal the decision made by the federal judge, and amazingly, that appeal is system to this day (Unlike Tom Brady and Deflategate, Peterson’s suspension won’t be reinstated if his side loses the appeal).

Anyway, Peterson’s reinstatement didn’t even end this entire mess. The running back didn’t like the way the Vikings treated him while he was suspended, so he . In May 2015, there was a thought that Peterson wanted out of Minnesota so badly that he’d Vikings didn’t trade him.

In the end, the Vikings did something for Peterson that would make any player feel appreciated: They gave him more money. Peterson July 2015, and the two sides have been at peace since then.

If there was one NFL sex scandal that had it all, this was it.

Sex? Check.

Sex toys? Check.

Naked women? Check.

Roughly thirty Vikings players? Check.

The Love Boat legend was born on Oct. 6, 2005 when Fred Smooth and teammate Lance Johnstone decided to charter two giant boats for a cruise on Lake Minnetonka. Instead of holding the cruise during the offseason though, the duo decided to do it during the Vikings’ bye week.

What transpired next is the stuff of legend.

The crew that was working on the two love boatt player of the year at the Catalan Football Federation awards despite not being expected to attend in person.”I’m very proud to be here, I want to thank my friends and the club,” he explained.”Football, football, football, those are my priorities.”Is didn’t think anything weird was going on until a few minutes after they left dock. At that point, many of the females onboard started “going down into a lower restroom area and changing out of the clothes that they had been wearing when they got on the boat, and were emerging either scantily clad or nearly naked.”

According after the incident (via The Smoking Gun), Smoot was seen using a sex toy on two women. Quarterback Daunte Culpepper was on the receiving end of a lap dance from a naked woman. Another witness saw Bryant McKinnie perform oral sex on a female while she sat on a bar counter — an act that Smoot later referred patch.”

Urban dictionary liked Smoot’s description so much that .

The crazy thing is that all of this happened in a span of just one hour. The cruise was supposed to be three and a half hours long, but it was cut short when the charter captains decided to end things because the situation was getting too crazy.

We’ll likely never know all the details of the Love Boat, so let’s just be happy with the ones we have.

Two months after the scandal, four Vikings players were charged for the incident. Culpepper, Smoot, McKinnie and Moe Williams were chargers: Indecent conduct, disorderly conduct and lewd or lascivious conduct.

Ironically enough, it seems that the Lovem boss Harry Redknapp is urging Manchester United to move for Real Madrid attacker Gareth Bale.Bale’s Real Madrid exit was all but confirmed on Sunday after manager Zinedine Zidane kept him sidelined for the final game of the season – a dismal 2-0 de Boat brought the team together. The Vikings were 1-3 before the Love Boat incident, but would go 8-4 over the season’s final 12 games and finish second in the NFC North.

The dramatic improvement didn’t help coach Mike Tice though. He was fired after a 9-7 season.

Of course, Tice only had himself to blame for his firing because he was embroiled in his own scandal. In early 2005, the NFL found out that Tice was scalping Super Bowl tickets. The after Tice promised to never do it again.

Johnny Manziel finally got a job offer, but he probably won’t take it

Former quarterback has been since March 11, but that could change soon, because Johnny Football now has a standing job offer.

A restaurant in Spokane, Washington is currently hiring, and if Manziel wants a job, it sounds like they’re interested in adding him to the team.

It’s not exactly an job, but you have to start somewhere when you’re a month and a half into unemployment. Of course, working at a taco restaurant in Spokane wouldn’t be a very easy commute for Manziel, who’s spent the past several montho Ramos has backed Zinedine Zidane to stay as Los Blancos coach.More doubts have emerged about Zidane after defeat to Real Mallorca. But Ramos said, “It would be very easy tease clause for Maxi Gomez, according to reports.Sky Sports says the two clubs are now discussing the method of payment for the £44.85m fee.According to La Liga rules, West Ham will have to pay the release clause in full at the competition’s headquao say that Zidane will be here until the end of the season.”That would put an s living in Los Angeles, but that’s a minor detail.

Thanks to the job offer, the marquee at Taco Time has become one of the most photographed tourist attractions in all of Spokane.

Manziel probably won’t take the taco job, but he should seriously start thinking about what he wants to do next. If he wants to return to the NFL, it won’t be easy: He doesn’t have an agent (Drew Rosenhaus ) and teams aren’t interested in him right now.
